Introducing new file format resources
We’ve long realised here at Zamzar that file formats can be a confusing business – it’s why we created an easy tool to convert between them in the first place. There are literally hundred’s of different formats around for all sorts of different programs. Heck, you can even get file formats for your sewing machine !
We thought it would be helpful to start providing more detailed information about the various file formats that Zamzar supports for conversion to help give you a better idea of how you can use them, and in what programs they are supported.
So from today we’ll be hotlinking to individual file format information pages on our conversion types page as well as providing a dedicated file formats information page. Links will go through to dedicated pages giving background information on the file format, what programs support it and useful links for it. They will look like the one below:
We’d love feedback from you on what information would be useful for you on these pages, and on any improvements you’d like to see so that we can make them even better. Please let us know in the comments below, on Twitter or Facebook !
Convert iWork (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) files to MS Office – online and free
Zamzar now supports conversion of Apple iWork (Pages, KeyNote and Numbers) files into a variety of other useful formats including Microsoft Office formats.
We’re really excited about these new conversions – as the number of Mac users continues to grow rapidly more and more people are using iWork to generate and share documents, presentations and spreadsheets, yet not everyone can open them … until now.
You can use Zamzar to upload any Pages (word processing doc), KeyNote (presentation) or Numbers (spreadsheet) and convert them to any one of the following formats:
Pages (.pages) to:
- doc – Microsoft Word Document
- pdf – Portable Document Format
- rtf – Rich Text Format
- txt – Text document
KeyNote (.key) to:
- ppt – Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation
Numbers (.numbers) to:
- csv – Comma Separated Values
- pdf – Portable Document Format
- xls – Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet
iWork is an office suite of desktop applications created by Apple for the Mac OS X and iOS operating systems, and Zamzar supports conversion for all versions of iWork from iWork ’05 right through to the very latest release (currently iWork ’09).
Useful tip: Files created by iWork before the iWork ’09 release are saved into directories. As you cannot upload directories to Zamzar, to convert these files make sure you compress them into a .zip format first so that your directory becomes a .zip file named “someName.pages.zip”, like so:
This is the world’s first support for conversion of iWork files – No other service exists (online or offline) to do this independently from a Mac (even Apple’s iWork.com requires you to own iWork to use it !), and as everything is based in a browser you can peform the conversion on any platform
We’ll be rolling out support for even more “to” formats for Keynote over the coming weeks.
Enough ! No more pop-under ads
We know that many of you have found the pop-under advertisements that run on Zamzar annoying:

Up until now we’ve been willing to put up with them, as they have provided much needed revenue for the business, and generally speaking if you were determined enough to block them you could.
However, we’ve decided that enough is enough – Ads we’ve seen recently have been obnoxious, distracting, misleading and downright annoying.
We are therefore very pleased to announce that we are removing pop-under ads from Zamzar for all users effective immediately
Say goodbye to this:

Phew !
Convert BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF to WebP
At Zamzar we’re always keen to support newly released file formats and we’re pleased to announce that from today we now support image file conversions both to and from Google’s newly released WebP format.
Google is on a mission to make the web faster – images and photos make up about 65% of the bytes transmitted per web page today, and the new WebP format is an attempt to try and reduce the size of those images – WebP is a method of lossy compression that can be applied to photographic images to make them smaller, without sacrificing too much quality. It offers compression that has shown almost 40% more byte-size efficiency than JPEG for the same quality of image in a large scale study of 900,000 images on the Web. If these images or a portion of these images were held as WebP, bandwidth would be greatly reduced without loss of image quality.
We’re therefore pleased to say you can now use Zamzar to convert these formats both to and from WebP for all of the following formats :
- bmp – Windows bitmap
- emf – Windows Enhanced Metafile
- gif – Compuserve graphics interchange
- jpg – JPEG compliant image
- pcx – PC Paintbrush Bitmap Graphic
- png – Portable Network Graphic
- tga – Truevision Targa Graphic
- tiff – Tagged image file format
- wbmp – Wireless Bitmap File Format
We hope these conversions will be useful to those of you who want to use the new WebP image technology from Google in your web pages or applications.

Convert MS Project (mpp) files to pdf, jpg, xls and more
Zamzar now supports the ability to convert Microsoft Project files into a variety of different formats. MS Project is a popular project management application introduced by Microsoft way back in 1984 to, er closely track and monitor people and projects. Sound familiar ?
Whilst MS Project has proved useful for various project managementy-tasks such as tracking progress, managing budgets and analyzing workloads it uses a proprietary .mpp file format to save project management files to. This can make it difficult to share files with co-workers who don’t happen to have MS Project installed themselves. We’ve fixed this problem by allowing you convert these files into PDF or any of the following image formats:
- bmp – Windows bitmap
- gif – Compuserve graphics interchange
- jpg – JPEG compliant image
- pdf – Portable Document Format
- png – Portable Network Graphic
- tiff – Tagged image file format
- xls – Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet
So for you all the project managers out there we hope this gives you an easy way of sharing project plans with colleagues without asking them to first perform a mammoth install of Microsoft Project !
Convert csv to xlsx, ods to xlsx, wks to xlsx, xls to xlsx
We’re broadening our support for Microsoft Office formats, and you can now use Zamzar to convert any of the following formats into Microsoft’s .xlsx format – an increasingly popular spreadsheet format introduced in MS Office 2007:
- csv – Comma Separated Values
- ods – OpenDocument spreadsheet
- wks – Microsoft Works Spreadsheet
- xls – Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet
We hope this conversion will be useful to those of you who receive documents in these formats from colleagues and friends who need them returned in the .xlsx format.
Convert doc to jpg, doc to gif, doc to png and more
You can now use Zamzar to convert MS Word documents (.doc files) into a variety of different image formats, including jpg, gif and png. This conversion is really useful for situations when you might want to embed graphics or thumbnails of Word documents into a website, or to share the contents of a document with a client in a format that can’t be edited by them.
You can now convert MS Word documents into any of the following formats:
- bmp – Windows bitmap
- gif – Compuserve graphics interchange
- jpg – JPEG compliant image
- pcx – PC Paintbrush Bitmap Graphic
- png – Portable Network Graphic
- ps – Postscript document
- thumbnail – Thumbnail image
- tiff – Tagged image file format
MS Word doesn’t allow you to save into any of these image formats, so to convert your Word docs, just head on over to Zamzar.
