Converting an image sounds like a fairly self-contained task. You have a PNG, you need a JPG, and that should really be the end of the matter.
Except the image is too large. Or sideways. Or you need it in black and white. What began as a simple file conversion has become a small editing project.
We’re all about simplifying things, so we’ve added a set of advanced options to Zamzar’s image converter. If you’ve converted an image recently, you may have already spotted them. Alongside changing formats, such as PNG to JPG, you can now resize, rotate, blur, mirror and make other adjustments during the conversion process, all without downloading separate editing software or opening another app.
You might be wondering if you need the extra bells and whistles, and, for some conversions, you won’t. But when your image needs a little more attention before it’s ready to send, share or upload, you can now sort that out at the same time as converting the file.
Why we added advanced image options
Small image jobs sometimes have a habit of becoming much bigger than expected. Consider the familiar business of sending your mum a picture.
She’d like the photo from Sunday. Not the one where she’s blinking. The other one. And could you make it a bit smaller because her phone doesn’t like big pictures? Also, it’s come through sideways before, so make sure it’s the right way up. And don’t send it as “one of those files” she can’t open.
You find the image. To your mum it’ll be enormous. You open image-editing software to resize it and you’re greeted by an interface you remember from what feels like nine years ago. It’s since had an update, added a bunch of new panels and apparently developed professional ambitions. It takes you 20 minutes to eventually work out how to make the image smaller. Then you notice it’s sideways. Back to the editor. You finally save it again, this time as a JPG, because of that one time you introduced your mum to a new image format, and at this stage you don’t want to widen her horizons further. Before you know it, you’ve spent more than half an hour making the necessary edits to the file.
Most of the time you aren’t creating a polished design. You just need to make something smaller before emailing it, turn a photo the right way up or make one other tiny change. Opening another app, especially one you haven’t touched in an age and now have to relearn how to use, feels like more work than the job deserves.
That’s why we’ve added these editing options directly into our image converter. Everything happens in one place and takes just a few clicks. Then you can send the image to your mum and discover she wanted the other picture after all.
What you can do with Zamzar’s new image-editing options
You can now use these settings in the image converter:
- Resize image shrinks or enlarges your image by a chosen percentage so it’s the size you need. Alternatively select one of the preset sizes to optimise the image for a specific platform, such as Instagram, Facebook or YouTube.
- Rotate image turns your picture by 90, 180 or 270 degrees, correcting a photo that’s sideways or upside down.
- Black and white removes the colour from your image in a single click.
- Mirror image flips your picture horizontally, which comes in handy when you need the subject facing the other way.
- Blur image does what it says on the tin: it adds a softening effect to reduce detail and sharpness.
- Auto orientate reads the orientation data your camera or phone stores with the image and turns the picture the right way up.
How to use the new image-editing features
Using the new settings only takes a few moments:
1. Upload your image to our conversion tool using the green ‘Choose Files‘ button or by dragging and dropping the file onto the page:
2. Select the output format under ‘Step 2‘ using the dropdown menu, for example JPG, PNG or another supported image format:
3. Work your way through the advanced settings menu choosing any of the edits you’d like to apply:
4. You can use one option on its own or combine several together. For example, you might resize an image using the dropdown menu:
Rotate the image:
Select the tickbox to make your image black and white:
Change to a mirror image:
Blur your image:
Or simply select the tickbox to auto-orientate:
5. Once you’re happy with the selected settings, click ‘Convert’ (or ‘Apply Settings’):
6. When ready, you can download your converted file:
Your converted image will include any edits you’ve selected, so there’s no need to repeat the process elsewhere.
