What is an EFX file?
EFX is a document format used by eFax, an online fax service that lets people send and receive faxes electronically.
Instead of arriving through a traditional fax machine, an eFax document can arrive as a file attached to an email. One of the formats historically used for these documents is EFX, the eFax Messenger document format.
Challenges can arise if you need to open an old EFX file today. EFX is a specialist format, so web browsers, PDF readers and most standard document applications don’t know what to do with it.
Why convert an EFX file to PDF?
PDF files are supported by almost every modern computer, phone and tablet and can be opened by most web browsers (or viewed online via our online PDF viewer!)
Converting an EFX fax file to a PDF makes the document much easier to open and share. You can also print it using standard software or keep it in a document archive without relying on specialist fax software being available in the future. This can be useful if you’ve found old EFX files in an email archive and just need to see what they contain.
Why are EFX files difficult to convert?
EFX is closely associated with the eFax ecosystem and isn’t widely supported by other software products.
The traditional way to convert an EFX document has been to install eFax Messenger, open the file there and export it as a PDF. That’s fine if you already have compatible software and an appropriate eFax setup, but it’s a lot of work when all you have is an old file that you need to read.
